The allegory of the moths

ENGLISH TRANSLATION

One night the moths gathered together, seeking the candle in their meeting place. They said: “Someone must go and bring us news of what we seek.” One moth flew to a distant palace and saw the candle’s light in its halls. It returned and opened the book of its journey, describing what little it had understood. But a wise voice among them said: “You know nothing of the candle.” Another crossed the threshold of light and hurled itself towards the flame. It flew within the radiance it desired; the candle prevailed, and the moth was overcome. It too returned, bearing fragments of secrets, and spoke of its meeting with the candle. “That is no true sign either,” said the voice. “What have you shown us beyond the first?” A third arose, growing ever more intoxicated, and danced into the very heart of the fire. It embraced the flame and mingled with it, gladly losing itself within the fire. When the fire seized it from head to foot, its body turned red like the flames. From afar, the voice saw that the candle had made the moth one with its light. “Only this moth has entered the heart of the matter. Who could know? Only this one knows.” The one who leaves no trace or knowledge of itself is the one among them who truly knows. Until you forget your body and your soul, how could you know the Beloved, even for a moment? Whoever offers you no more than a slender sign writes a hundred wounds in the blood of your soul. No breath is intimate with this mystery; there is room for no one in this place.
